San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, is a great place travel on foot. Signs of growth and new construction can be found throughout this capital city, like San Juan’s new public library. Contractors already have construction equipment in place and are laying the building’s foundation and the construction project is slated to be completed and ready to open for summer reading as schools close in June. Walking along the wall that surrounds the city is an unforgettable experience. The vast sea, stretching as far as the eye can see, might remind you of the Spanish adventurer Columbus and his expedition (though the only ships you see now belong to the idle rich). The cruise ship dock has a spacious promenade featuring royal palms and large benches for relaxation. From the promenade you can stroll along the Paseo La Princesa by a seven-meter thick wall. Walking along the street, you’ll visit historical places starting with the hotel El Convento, a Carmelite convent of the 1600’s that’s now a museum. You’ll also find the San Juan Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in this hemisphere. Further along the street you’ll come to the magnificent Fortress El Morro that took more than two centuries to construct. The fort is located around greenery where you can enjoy yourself by flying kites in the strong crosswinds. Walking is the best option even in the inner city. Streets are narrow and cars are too numerable to make a vehicle tour enjoyable (or even practical). Walking also gives you the pleasure of treading on the blue cobblestones paving the streets. The cobblestones were reportedly the ballast of the Spanish ships that arrived on the island centuries ago, paving your way with history. You will have plenty to remember about the old city. Transforming an empty hospital into an historic hotel has its challenges. Architect Gene Dub, owner of the Charles Camsell Hospital, is working to reconstruct the demolished Alberta Hotel, demolished in 1984 to make way for Canada Place. The present reconstruction effort, estimated to cost from $10 million to $15 million, is a labor of love for Dub. He wants the hotel to look exactly the same as before its demolition. As part of that effort, 2000 chunks of stone saved from the old hotel are being used in the construction. The task of assembling the wall turned out to be a real-life jigsaw puzzle because some (but not all) pieces were numbered to indicate their position Based on dimensions from the old hotel, an outline was made of the wall on a flat surface. Piecing together the jigsaw started with placing all the numbered pieces in their correct spots. The remaining pieces of stone were then fitted in to complete the wall. After three months of work, all the stones are numbered and ready to be fitted as real construction starts in December. Stones and bricks from the Rothsay Apartments, another demolished structure, will also be used to construct another wall. The north side of the building, however, will be a modern wall of glass. Another major construction challenge is to move a huge, house-size, structure to the roof. A distinct cupola to cap a curved corner in the southwest of the hotel is 27 feet in width. It must be lifted to the top in a safe manner after obtaining all the necessary permissions. The project also involves reconstructing the old hotel’s bar, with all its original features now stored in boxes at the city’s archives. Construction of Kennedy Campus Center, the new student center at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design (MasArt), was an exercise in dense urban construction. The work had to be done in a zero lot line site in the busy Longwood Medical Area near the busy MBTA station. Working in such conditions is logistically complicated, as it had to minimally disrupt operations in adjacent structures and avoid safety incidents. Following the best work practices and constant communication were critical in meeting these challenges. Walsh Brothers, Inc., the Boston-based construction management firm with a record of managing such dense urban constructions, was chosen for the project. They managed to renovate three floors of MassArt as well as adding the new two-story Kennedy Campus Center, an all-glass structure that extends into the Longwood Avenue. In addition to this, they had to relocate the college bookstore from the first floor to the basement. The project’s completion was recently celebrated by Walsh Brothers, Design Partner Miller Dyer Spears, the Massachusetts College Building Authority, MassArt alumni, faculty, and current students. The project expanded the range of student services and the capability to accommodate higher volumes, including 100 new seats in the dining commons, an art supply and bookstore, student galleries, a Peet’s Coffee & Tea outlet, and centralized student services. Neighboring Massachusetts College of Pharmacy helped fund the project.
