Safety Features of Modern Road Rollers Prevent Fatal Accidents.
This construction equipment information is sponsored by Volvo Rents of Riverside, CA - The Drum Roller Rental Riverside CA and San Bernardino Forklift Rental Experts.
The construction takeoff in China has already claimed a number of casualties, literally. A road roller ran out of control and caused two deaths in Yunan Province recently. This isn’t an isolated incident; another road roller accident in Hangzhou resulted in one more death. The tragedy here is that these deaths could have been avoided with simple mechanical safety precautions. Here are a few common safety measures implemented in modern road rollers:
- A dead man’s lever cuts operation of the machine when released. This prevents the equipment from rolling out of control.
- Engines cut to an idle speed immediately when not in operation. This reduces wear on the engine, fuel consumption, and noise pollution.
- A combined clutch and engine shut-off means that if the engine is ever off, the machine is in gear and unable to roll. The vibration of an idling motor can set the machine rolling, especially on downhill slopes.
With safe operation and smart engineering, hopefully no more will lose their lives to road rollers.
